
At the wish of François Mitterrand, the National Library of France (Bibliothèque National de France - BnF) was opened in 1996. There are an estimated 13 million books, plus periodicals and above all a world-class high-tech digital library. The library is situated on the Left Bank, in the 13th arrondissement; it consists of four glass towers in the form of four open books. They each carry a name: Tower of Time, Tower of Laws, Tower of Numbers, Tower of Letters.
