Chatelet les Halles is a popular district much frequented by Parisians and characterised by a host of restaurants and shops. In 1183, Philippe Auguste built the market (les Halles). Napoleon III undertook extensive renovation work in 1851. The architect Baltard was responsible for constructing 10 metal wings but the market was still unequal to the task of meeting demands of customers and the State, and was demolished in 1963.
