Before it became a prison, the Conciergerie was the Palais de la Cité, symbol of royal authority in particular at the time of Hugues Capet. It takes its name from its concierge who was paid rents for the palace boutiques and later the cells when it became a prison. Many prisoners at the time of the French Revolution were incarcerated here, including Marie-Antoinette, before being guillotined.
