Founded in 1253 by Robert de Sorbon, the university originally had no more than twenty students. In the Middle Ages, only theology was taught and the courses were taught out of doors. In 1257, with the king’s official recognition, the university began to grow. The Chapel of the Sorbonne is a symbol of classical architecture in Paris. The square also has symbolic importance as the bastion of student demonstrations in May 1968. Nowadays, its terraces are filled with students, intellectuals and tourists.
