Le Marais

The district's fame dates from the 17th century when the Marais was synonymous with elegance, culture and festivities.

The district was called the Marais (marsh) because it was bordered by the old riverbed of the Seine whose soft ground made it long unsuitable for building of any kind. The Knights Templar were the first to settle here in the 12th century.

The Marais is still a very lively district today with many monuments bearing witness to the capital's past. The places of interest include the Carnavalet and Picasso Museums and the Place des Vosges. The area is full of unusual sights and little courtyards which have kept their picturesque charm.
