François Mitterrand decided to build a new opera house in Paris, one of the aims being to locate it in a more popular district. The plans were drawn up by the architect Carlos Ott. The building is modern but understated: blue granite from Brittany, white marble from Verona and large glass panels. The director of the Opéra Bastille, Gérard Mortier, encourages cultural openness and new trends in the opera. Don’t miss the view of Paris from the 7th floor.
