Salomon de la Brosse, the architect originally commissioned by Marie de Médicis in 1613 to build the Palais du Luxembourg, drew inspiration from the Pitti Palace in Rome while at the same time remaining faithful to the characteristics of French Châteaux. Before its present parliamentary vocation, the Palais was used as a prison, one its famous inmates being the artist David. It has been the seat of the French Senate since 1825.
