As a result of a vow made by Louis XV in 1744, the construction of the Panthéon was entrusted to the architect Soufflot. 1791, the Constituent Assembly decided to dedicate the monument to "Great Men, from a Grateful Homeland". Built in the Greco-Roman style, the edifice is in the form of a 110 metre long "Greek cross" surmounted by a dome. The crypt underneath the Panthéon contains the remains of 73 famous people such as Jean Jaurès, Pierre and Marie Curie, Emile Zola, Jean Moulin, Malraux.
