Place de la Concorde was built in honour of Louis XV by the architect Gabriel. It is octagonal in form, with eight statues adorning the angles. These statues represent the major French cities of Lyon, Bordeaux, Lille, Strasbourg, Marseille, Nantes, Brest and Rouen. The two fountains dedicated to marine and river navigation are inspired by those of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Lastly, at the centre stands an obelisk (23 metres high and 33 centuries old), donated by Egypt in honour of Champollion, the first person to translate the hieroglyphics.
