Laid out by Baron Haussmann in 1854, the square is the point of departure of the famous streets: Magenta, République, Voltaire and Turbigo. At its centre stands the Statue of the Republic on a bronze base, tracing the entire history of the Republic over a century. In the northern part of the square are the barracks designed by the architect Davioud.
