Place des Vosges, named at the time Place Royale, was built at the decision of Henri IV. The elegant square was soon lined by town houses and mansions. The perfectly balanced and harmonious architecture was no match for the French Revolution. It was renamed Place des Vosges by Napoleon in honour of the first French department to pay its taxes. Many famous people have yielded to its beauty: Richelieu, Victor Hugo, Madame de Sévigné, Alphonse Daudet, etc.
