In 1686, the architect Hardouin-Mansart was commissioned by Louis XIV to build Place Vendôme in octagonal form, with a statue od the Sun King in its centre. It takes its name from the owner of one of the mansions surrounding the square. The statue did not survive the French Revolution and Napoleon had his own statue erected on top of a column. The square is a model of classical architecture and is today the heart of Parisian and French luxury.
